Raspberry (Red) in the US

You're generally looking at getting your raspberry canes established in the ground when they're dormant, usually as bare-root plants or young canes. This is typically in late winter or early spring, after the worst of the frosts have passed, or even in the fall. The timing really does depend on your specific USDA zone, you know. For folks in warmer zones like 8-10, you can get them in as early as January or February, right through to April, or again in the fall. Those in zones 3-7 will often aim for April or May. It takes a fair old while from establishing them to getting your first proper harvest, about a year, but it's worth the wait, believe me.

Once your canes are in, give them a good start. Plant them about 2 to 3 feet (60-90 cm) apart in rows, leaving 6 to 8 feet (1.8-2.4 m) between rows for good air circulation. They do need a bit of support, like a trellis or wires, especially as they get laden with fruit. You don't often see plug plants for raspberries, so you're mostly working with bare roots or potted canes, which is usually easier anyway.
